Helwan University (Egypt)

Meeting of the European EUROSUNMED project and 2nd International School

Helwan University (Egypt) will be hosting the forthcoming meeting of the EUROSUNMED project, an initiative designed to contribute towards developing renewable energies and reducing dependence on fossil fuels on the European as well as African shores of the Mediterranean. It is also seeking to contribute towards strengthening the economies of North Africa.

The project is not only developing technology in an array of fields, but is also developing facilities for testing it in the countries of North Africa under the specific conditions of the area (temperature, dust, etc.); it is also establishing the bases for a strong research network on both sides of the Mediterranean by means of exchange programmes.

During the meeting, a review will be made of the progress achieved in the three lines of development: photovoltaics, solar thermoelectrics and grid integration, in addition to pressing forward in the specifying of joint training programmes.

The meeting will be attended by the project partners, including IK4-TEKNIKER. The Basque R&D centre is responsible for the lines linked to the development of heliostats for concentrated solar power plants.

EUROSUNMED 2nd International School

In parallel, the project will be organising its second International School at Helwan on renewable energies and grid integration as a key component for disseminating the technology in the participating countries.

This workshop, the previous edition of which had over 200 attendees, will comprise three days of lectures on the advances in the field of generating renewable electricity, and will include a poster exhibition and visits to facilities. The project is funding part of the costs of the students and will be giving priority to students from North Africa.

EUROSUNMED

EUROSUNMED is a European project focussing on the development of technologies to obtain solar energy and is geared towards collaboration between European and African companies and academic and research centres.

Led by the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), it has a budget of € 5M and the participation of 17 universities and top research centres in the European Union, Egypt and Morocco.
