IK4-TEKNIKER presents a data model that stores information for aircraft maintenance.

IK4-TEKNIKER’s Unit for Intelligent Systems of Information will be presenting the paper “A standard-based data model for configuration management and maintenance support” at the 2nd IFAC Workshop on Advanced Maintenance Engineering, Services and Technology (A-MEST’ 12), to be held in Seville on 22 and 23 November 2012.

The R+D centre, which has participated in this workshop in the past, is due to present in this edition a standard-based data model for configuration management and maintenance support which can be applied to the aeronautics sector.

The best way of optimizing maintenance in this sector is by combining information on the configuration of the components throughout their lifecycle together with information on operation, logistics, costs, condition and reliability, and IK4-TEKNIKER is proposing the data model in which all this information can be stored.

The project is being developed within IK4-TEKNIKER’s strategic line of maintenance and reliability in the areas of diagnostics, prediction and strategies for operation, and is part of the PROSAVE2 project. This initiative corresponds to the sixth call of the CENIT programme and aims to develop more energy-efficient systems that respect the environment more, and which are set to be applied in a future, electrically-powered aircraft. Previously, IK4-TEKNIKER has participated in European projects like DYNAMITE and TATEM.

The workshop

This workshop is organised by the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) and it is the second time it is organised after the A-MEST’ 2010 held in Lisbon in 2010.

The aim of the sessions is to bring together scientists and researchers from companies and industries that focus on R+D to discuss and exchange experiences and present new developments in the area of maintenance engineering.

Subjects like the Impact of the improvement in maintenance services, new ICT tools for maintenance, intelligent systems for maintenance, new integrated approaches for reliability and maintenance engineering with a view to competitive production will be tackled over the two days.

IK4-TEKNIKER presents a robot that interacts with people and uses natural language.

The units for Autonomous and Intelligent Systems and Information Systems of IK4-TEKNIKER will be presenting the paper entitled "Interacting with a robot:a guide robot understanding natural language instructions" at the 6th International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient Intelligence & 4th International Workshop on Ambient Assisted Living (UCAmI & IWAAL 2012), due to take place in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Basque Country, from 3 to 5 December 2012.

The paper focuses on the development and integration of semantic technology into robots, and in this case it is a guide robot capable of understanding the instructions and/or requests given by people using natural language.

This development constitutes an advance in this field, since it is not necessary for people to learn programmed orders so that the robot can interpret them; they can simply make their requests naturally, the robot understands them and guides them immediately in an autonomous way.

The paper reflects the activities developed within the specialisation project run in the context of the EMAITEK 2011 programme of the Department for Industry, Innovation, Trade and Tourism of the Government of the Basque Autonomous Community (region).

Apart from this project, the Unit for Autonomous and Intelligent Systems of IK4-TEKNIKER will continue to work on the development of intelligent, autonomous robots capable of doing inspection and maintenance work, logistics, surveillance and support in the home, among other tasks.

Right now, the unit is coordinating various European projects, ROBOFOOT for the automation of the footwear industry, and the MAINBOT project to develop robots for inspecting large industrial facilities. It is also participating in various projects like the X-ACT, focusing on bi-manipulator robots that do collaborative tasks with people.

The conference and workshop

Ambient Intelligence is a paradigm representing a new generation of user-centred computation environments, the aim of which is to find new ways of integrating information technology into the devices of daily life and activities.

The main aim of the new edition of the conference and workshop will be to analyse the possibilities offered by Ambient Intelligence to contribute not only towards the evolution of intelligent cities, but also towards sustainable environments.

Intelligent transport, environmentally-friendly devices, “Ambient Assisting Living” (AAL) and e-Health, among others, will be leading subjects in the conference. So the city chosen to host these events, Vitoria-Gasteiz, is very much in tune with the subjects to be tackled during the conference, since it has been nominated European Green Capital 2012.
