Industry 4.0: The “Time to market” case

Flexibility, re-configurability and safety

Collaborative robotics offers solutions that are more flexible and re-configurable.

According to market forecasts, the demand for new airplanes is expected to grow significantly as 30,000 new units will be required by 2030. To deal with so much growth, the sector will be forced to reduce “time to market”, meaning that automation will have to be extensively adopted regardless of how complex this has always been in the field of aeronautics.

A company like DMP, an SME involved in the aeronautical business, finds it hard to organise production at dedicated plants because volumes in terms of families of parts are never sizeable enough to justify configurations of this kind.

Moreover, a high degree of variability of components with regard to shape, size and technical specifications requires that production processes be as flexible, smart and re-configurable as possible as well as connected.

In order to meet business demands, DMP requires know-how allowing them to automatically correct and re-configure CNC programmes monitoring in-operation tool wear and vibrations during machine measurements or reduce set-up time.

In other words, know-how that provides a flexible, smart, connected process that can adapt to changing requirements so that operators may focus on higher added value tasks.

IK4-TEKNIKER is addressing automation and robotic solutions that feature enabling technologies to improve process effectiveness by optimising operations, saving time, reducing costs and increasing reliability. It is also developing advanced solutions to meet requirements in terms of customer needs related to speed, accuracy, flexibility, re-configurability and safety.

The technology centre and DMP have been working together to develop a collaborative robotics solution, a bi-manipulative robot for aeronautical assemblage work. It is within the scope of this new concept linked to a collaborative working environment where the ultimate goal is to achieve process efficiency by guaranteeing operational safety.
