Technology for volumetric verification: multilateration

A measuring technique for verification and volumetric compensation

IK4-TEKNIKER is developing and introducing new technologies for the verification and volumetric compensation of geometrical errors in MTs and CMMs.

IK4-TEKNIKER's Metrology Unit is developing measuring technology and has come up with new systems of verification and volumetric compensation as well as appropriate procedures for carrying out these activities. The use of new equipment and techniques like multilateration makes it possible to improve the volumetric verification of machine tools (MT) and coordinate measuring machines (CMM) and their subsequent error correction, if appropriate.

The multilateration technique is based on the measuring of relative distances or shifts between a mobile reflector located on the machine and a set of fixed stations (specified by the measuring systems) located on the body of the machine or around it. These redundant distance measurements make it possible to calculate the spatial position and orientation of the machine extremely accurately for each point used in its verification by enabling the subsequent minimization of the said deviation by means of the compensation of the machine's numerical control.
